What Is The Point???
All right, I was really debating on whether I was going to write this one because I feel very conflicted about this day.
Valentine's Day!!!
Can someone explain to me the whole story for this day? There are so many variations of WHERE this day came from, but is there any concrete proof that ANY of these are real... well other than the Valentine's Day Massacre, which happened on February 14, 1929; resulting in the death of 7 people... 5 from the North Side Gang and 2 of their affiliates. I don't think I need to give y'all a history less on the event, but in short, it occurred during the Prohibition and it was between the Irish North Siders and the Italian "Chicago Outfit", which was led by the infamous Al Capone. Either way, the perps were never caught because there were too many varying stories to decipher who actually committed the murders.
Then of course we have the tale saying Valentine's Day is in honour of Saint Valentine, who was one of 2 men preaching the "good" word in Rome, Italy in the 3rd century AD. One of these men was martyred on February 14, 269AD.
We then have the story that there were at least 3 different men named Saints of Valentine. 1. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married ones and outlawed marriage. St. Valentine felt this was an injustice to the people and secretly married young couples. Claudius ordered Valentine to be killed.
2. There was a Saint Valentine who was a bishop, who is the "true" patron of the holiday. He was also ordered to be beheaded by Claudius II outside of Rome.
3. There is also myths that suggest Valentine was killed because he was attempting to help Christians escape Rome and from their harsh and deadly torture and beatings.
And to give a completely different view of the "holiday" was just a way to "Christianize" the Pagan holiday of LUPERCALIA... Lupercalia was actually celebrated today, February 15th. This was the Pagan festival of fertility, dedicated to the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus and the founders of Roman ~ Romulus and Remus.
I could go on and on about all the history of this holiday... most of it has to do with Christianity trying to ban "unchristian" holidays. Long story, short, there is a lot of controversy surrounding this day; and I, personally, don't celebrate Valentine's per say... as it is in current culture, it is a day dedicated to love and all that mushy crap.
I don't think there should be one day a year where you express your love to your partner; where you pay an exuberant amount of money for flowers or chocolates, etc. I guess you could say, I am Anti-Valentines. I am not anti love. I am just tired of companies and society trying to milk the average person for as much as they can, just because they love someone. Nah... not for me!!!
Besides all the mushy shyt... I think it is rather inconsiderate to all the people who have lost their loves, ones who have passed or people who are simply single. I choose to call that day "Happy Singles Awareness Day!!!"
Just saying.
Stay safe. Stay warm. Be Well. Be loved. Blessed Be my lovies
