I Am a Safe Space

Good Afternoon Lovies. I hope you are enjoying your Saturday. I hope you all are in good health and able to enjoy these last few weeks of summer. I can't say I am complaining, it isn't that hot out and the sun isn't glaring down with any excessive heat.

I don't really have a specific topic on my mind, that I urgently need to write about.

I AM going to discuss something that I feel is important to discuss, and should remain a top priority in our society; but somehow always seems to fall to the bottom of the list, as people sweep it under the rug; or feel that it isn't really a significant concern to our every day lives.

MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH

I write this as a mother, a sister, a daughter, a niece and as a wife.

I am really tired of hearing the saying, "Suck it up!" when it comes to boys and men, when they express how they feel. This mentality has been embedded into their brains, since the beginning of time, and I am one, who is strongly opposed to it. (I guess this puts me in a rather confusing position, no?)

Yes, I am very much an old school woman. I believe in the values of the man being the head of the household. I firmly stand in the honour, loyalty, respect, trust, obey and love of my man/partner (whatever term you may use).

Don't get it twisted, I am not talking about a tyrant or an abusive man who is all controlling!!!

(I am getting off topic here...)

I have a lot of male friends... acquaintances. I have several brothers. I have a son. I have an ol man. I watch how many of them have gone through some very tough situations, and were forced to swallow their pain and feelings because that is what society expected of them. I have watched others turn to substances to ease their pain; whether it be alcohol or drugs... anything to numb their pain.

All this because men and boys were told they were not to have emotions!!! I am here to remind them, YOU'RE HUMAN... YES YOU CAN HAVE EMOTIONS, AND NO, PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO RIDICULE YOU FOR SHARING THEM!!! YOU SHOULD FEEL SAFE TO EXPRESS THEM.

You would think, in this day and age, mental health would be a topic that has no stigma attached to it. You would think it wouldn't be taboo to speak about it... but suicide, overdoses, etc are more prominent than ever... yet society still turns a blind eye. When will everyone see, a lot of this could be different if they'd see with their hearts and ears, instead of their eyes???

I will always say, I'd rather spend hours hearing about what is troubling you; than sitting through a 5 minute eulogy at your funeral. I am a safe space... who is with me??? Are you a safe space??? Please listen to the silence, it speaks far more than any words can say.

Stay safe. Stay cool/warm. Be well. Be blessed. Most of all, KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOVED!!!

*** In Memory of all those we have loved and loss, feeling no one would understand or listen. For those who felt they were entirely alone, and simply wanted their pain to end. For those struggling now... we are here!!! ***
