Watch Your Words
PLEASE STOP USING THE BASTARDIZED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL QUOTE ~ "Kin-blood is not spoilt by water". This was translated from German from Reinhart Fuchs c. 1180. It then became"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." in English proverbs in the 1700s.
This literally means the polar opposite of you saying, "Blood is thicker than water". The original meaning is, chosen relationships (covenant/sworn loyalties) are stronger than family ties (womb).
I am sure people are going to comment that this is ridiculous and that blood ties are above everything. I am here to say, from personal experience, this simply is not true; saying this can be detrimental to some people.
What about people who grew up in abusive environments? What about people who were sexually abused either by family members, or strangers; and family wasn't there to protect (or believe) them?? What about people who have had family members kill other family members??? What about people who were neglected or rejected by family, and adopted or worse... just simply abandoned???I can only speak of my own experiences. I know of plenty others who have their own stories to tell, that are similar; so I am writing on their behalf, while keeping their anonymity. For those of us, we have famILY... they are the friends we chose to be kin.
I am adopted, so I was robbed of knowing my siblings my entire life; especially my sister. It angers me. It saddens me. It is not any of my siblings fault, but no one can tell me that "blood is thicker than water" because had I not done any digging, I never would have known any "blood". See what I am saying???
I have 5 blood brothers, 1 blood sister. Out of all of them, I only consider my sister family. I have an adopted sister and brother that I DO consider family; I grew up with them.
The bottom line is this...
I have all kinds of "blood" family that don't mean a thing to me; but I have a tribe that consists of brothers I would trust my life with. Brothers I would catch a bullet for. I have a Ma, I would do anything for. I caution people who try to tell me, they are NOT famILY!!!
I leave you with this... Sometimes, A LOT of the time, Blood is the most toxic thing in the world. I ask again, please mind your words, what could be a positive thing for you could be an extremely painful thing to another.
Stay safe. Stay warm. Be well. Be blessed. Most of all, Be LOVED!!!
